A Poem from an Alzheimer's Patient

Updated: Dec 13, 2022

One of our greatest honors at The Koselig House Assisted Living and Memory Care is our ability to offer specialized assistance to those with memory loss. In fact, it is because of our owner's familial experience with the disease of dementia that our home was created.

Grandmother's often have a special place in the hearts and lives of their grandchildren and Marion Senn was that inspiring light. Always involved with her family, Marion lived with a smile on her face and a zest for life. She was also a strong Norwegian who shared the traditions of her heritage with her family.

Marion Marie (Myhers) Senn, Grandmother of The Koselig House Assisted Living and Memory Care of DeForest's grandmother who lived with Alzheimer's disease.
Marion Marie (Myhers) Senn as a teenager.

Unfortunately, as Grandma Marion got older her family began to see signs of memory loss related to Alzheimer's disease. They quickly realized that she needed more care than they could provide. However, finding a home that would embrace Marion's spirit, allow her to retain her independence, and provide high-quality care was difficult to find.

After her passing, it became the goal of Marion's grandson, Darrin Senn and his wife Kim, owners of The Koselig House, to create a home that their Grandmother Marion would be proud of! In fact, the name Koselig comes from the Norwegian language and means,

“a feeling of deep contentment, provided by a person, place or atmosphere; experiencing happiness and personal well-being through a combination of nature, companionship and coziness”

Recently our Koselig Team came across this beautiful poem, which speaks to the way our person-centered care helps them to understand our residents, meet their needs, and stand beside them every step of the way!

Poem from an Alzheimer's Patient

DO NOT ASK ME TO REMEMBER,

DON’T TRY TO MAKE ME UNDERSTAND.

LET ME REST AND KNOW YOU’RE WITH ME,

KISS MY CHEEK AND HOLD MY HAND.

I’M SO CONFUSED BEYOND YOUR CONCEPT,

I AM SAD AND SICK AND LOST.

ALL I KNOW IS THAT I NEED YOU,

TO BE WITH ME AT ALL COST.

SO DO NOT LOSE YOUR PATIENCE WITH ME,

DO NOT SCOLD OR CURSE OR CRY.

I CAN’T HELP THE WAY I’M ACTING,

CAN’T BE DIFFERENT THOUGH I TRY.

JUST REMEMBER THAT I NEED YOU,

THAT THE BEST OF ME IS GONE.

PLEASE DON’T FAIL TO STAND BESIDE ME,

LOVE ME ‘TIL MY LIFE IS GONE.
